Hello Urban Elite Designs! I'm an architecural designer matched up with your team by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. I'm based in Illinois, but grew up in California like you. I finished my graduate degree in architecture in 2011 and have a couple of years experience working in architecture firms. Hopefully I'll be able to provide you some feedback, answer any questions you might have and introduce you to some architecture that might help you with your design.

Director of Community Relations: -Danielle Lechuga
1. In what ways could the cafeteria become a small community center for residents after school hours?
The residents could use it as a place to eat, the students could use it as a study space, and the sports teams and clubs could practice as well as hold their meetings in there.
2. According to administration, what kinds of expenses do you have to consider when opening the existing spaces to outside community groups?
We would have to consider the price of keeping everything running later hours as well as hiring staff to monitor the space.
3. In what ways can the community help to maintain the space?
The community and students could help maintain the space by volunteering to clean it and getting community service hours by doing that, as well as having parent volunteers to help maintain the space if they are using it.

1. What types of seating are used in the cafeteria? the types of seating i would for see being used in the cafeteria for eating would be long tables stretching across an area of the cafeteria that are easily put away for storage. For lounge seating, i have constructed many versions of booths that can be circular, and which the seats as well are circular and pull out. another idea is to have many couches with innovative designs be displayed near the lounge area with tables near by. Also, a wall between four sets of chairs on either side of a four foot wall that also adds a table, so all together the table may seat up to eight people. These designs can be seen in my sketch ups.
2. What type of lighting is used in the cafeteria? Near the lounge area, spotlights will be used to darken and lighten the areas to fit the need of either a lot of light for reading, or minimal light for relaxation. The lighting for the long cafeteria tables will be standard energy efficient fluorescent that face down to inflict a majority of light.
3. What types of window treatments are used? Solar control window shades that maintain sunlight and conserve energy which are Roller Shades. Also, sun control fabrics will control temperatures, lessen glare and reduce fading for interior furnishings. The color chosen will be a slate gray fabric color.
4. How is artwork displayed in the cafeteria? For artwork, we will display a mural of a skyline which ties into our logo. The mural will be located on the second floor, and will have lights installed within the mural. The lights will be used for school dances to add decoration and flair and a modern twist of art in the cafeteria. Students artwork will also be displayed along the walls as a part of the lounge area to incorporate Mira Loma High School students into being a part of the art in the cafeteria. On the first floor, a statue of the schools mascot, the matador, will be displayed inside the indoor garden.

Considering that the building is over 50 years old, it is lacking in modern energy efficient technology. With such a large rooftop the immense amount of space seems to be going to waste, so to make more efficient use of the space solar panels should be added. Also, the current windows are not energy efficient and should be replaced by double pane windows that would act as a natural insulator, keeping reasonable temperatures during seasons, while still being energy efficient.
Originally this building was called "the cafetorium" because it served the purpose of a cafeteria during school hours and as an auditorium for community events. What is currently the "black box theater" used to share a uniform space with the cafeteria. However, a wall was installed separating the theater from the cafeteria, eliminating the former stage.

1. How is government involved in Green Building Standards on school campuses?

---The government is involved in the Green Building Standards for school campuses by enforcing that the Eco-friendly program, LEED, establishes standards that will be most beneficial to future buildings. The government also supplies funds to those companies and districts that are Eco-friendly, as a financial incentive.

2. What does Mira Loma do to reduce their "carbon footprint"?

---The school really doesn’t do much to reduce their “carbon footprint” and this is shown through the appliances being out of date and consuming an unnecessarily high utility cost. The utility cost could indeed go down if the school spent money on newer and better appliances that actually are Eco-friendly. Now even though this is the case, Mira Loma does try to help the environment through recycling clubs and projects, but is it enough?

3. What does the San Juan Unified School District do to save energy and resources?

---One way that SJUSD cuts back on electrical consumption is by shutting off all lighting and air-conditioning systems at 3 o’clock everyday. The district also is working with SMUD in trying to figure out how to lower the electrical costs.

4. What kinds of local utilities can you partner with to support sustainability and energy efficiency?

---We could work with electric and gas utilities and other program sponsors—potentially including third-party efficiency program administrators, state energy offices, regional energy efficiency alliances, and other organizations.
---Utilities and other third-party efficiency program administrators such as public benefit programs may also help us understand the energy sector and the energy consumption patterns in their jurisdictions.

Katie Korolevych (Director of Interior Building Design)
The cafeteria can seat and serve 555 students a time. Currently the paint is standard, flooring is all tiles, and restroom designs are simple and not corresponding to the general cafeteria design.

Director of Landscape Design-Kieleen Pilcher:
1. Currently there are no plants other than small bushes around the cafeteria.
2. Water would be the biggest cost for landscaping.
3. Water features are generally calming and can bring a quiet place for students to eat and study as well as a community garden that can also be used for community relations and allow outside people to enjoy it or a class to come and study the plants and species that live among it.
