Third Place - Nikhil Chaudhuri - Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #278

Summary

My collect info step started with examining our current athletic facilities. I was quickly able to determine to context for my design project - Wannan Gym. While our current athletic center is new, modern, elegant, and generally successful, Wannan, although an important and interesting space - a multi-use, recreational facility at the center of the campus - lacks architecturally what it has in potential and location. I interview many people, including students, the two women who run our school's fundraiser, which is held in Wannan, and our school's building and grounds manager. Wannan has many problems, but the main ones are its appearance (plain and brick), lack of natural light (because it has very few windows), clogging of campus flow, out of date technologies, and lack of necessary facilities. My collect info step left me with the question in my mind - and this question became the fundamental question for my design project - if Wannan is the center of the campus location-wise and in some ways in function as well, then why is it an obstacle and a issue architecturally? And, how do I transform its architecture to satisfy is potential and location?
