Renovation and Expansion of Wannan Gym at Sidwell Friends School - 2014 National High School Architecture Competition - Nikhil Chaudhuri

Some of the most noticeable issues, as illustrated in the images above, are Wannan's unappealing exterior, lack of natural light, single water fountain, crammed, unprotected seating area, and very small, uninviting main entrance, not to mention the fact that the building is pretty much just a basketball court with no other facilities, such as locker rooms or the like. Nevertheless, Wannan is still a very important building. Many students either play in the gym during recess or have PE class in the gym. The middle school occasionally holds assemblies in the space as well. Finally, as I will talk about later, the school's huge fundraiser, which is held in the Fall, is held in Wannan Gym. Wannan really is not a very good facility given its recreational, multi-use importance. After talking to many people, including students, Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Adelfio (who run the fundraiser), and Mr. Sawyer, our building and grounds manager, I was able to gather a very unsatisfactory picture of Wannan. In fact, Mr. Sawyer said that if the school was ever to do something with Wannan, as they are actually thinking about for the somewhat recent future, they would tear the whole thing down and start anew. I was initially considering renovating Wannan rather than completely redesigning it, and that sounded great to me because now I would have a lot of architectural freedom!
