Renovation and Expansion of Wannan Gym at Sidwell Friends School - 2014 National High School Architecture Competition - Nikhil Chaudhuri

The edited Google Earth image above demonstrates why Wannan is such an obstacle. The yellow arrows show where middle school students coming from the Upper School garage must walk in order to get to the Middle School. The northern path in particular is very long-winded and unnecessary. Even the southern path is fairly constrained, as the pathway between Wannan and the art center is not side enough. Lastly, the orange x-ed area is just a muddy plot of grass that is not being really used at all. The red line that continues beyond Wannan along the orange x-ed area represents the fence and large drop preventing students from walking right around the northern side of Wannan. Overall, Wannan blocks campus flow and does not make use of all the space available. Improving campus flow and Wannan's position in the campus would become another major aspect of my design.
