Tiny Park, Giant Heart
|Las Vegas is a concrete jungle in the middle of the desert; and although this adult wonderland is fun for a vacation many locals struggle to find family friendly places that avoid casinos or walks through bars. The extremely hot summers here also don’t encourage many outdoor adventures; this means that most families tend to lean towards staying indoors. Not that this is a bad thing, but children and adults alike need a certain amount of sunshine to remain happy and healthy. So for those who choose not to stay inside, it leaves them scavenging for places to hang out and enjoy. Taking this into account a tiny park on Garces and 6th Street is what it might take for Las Vegas to better improve its sense of community.
This location is already a part of the Downtown Centennial Plan, a plan in which older parts of the city are being updated, so adding a park will only further enhance the experience in this up and coming part of town. A park that will incorporate the needs of the people in the area and take into account that it must be able to last against this desert climate. A sort of park that will integrate the aspects of a green paradise and a rugged rocky plain alongside the modern vibes starting to pop up in Vegas.
I plan on including a shaded eating area that will hopefully draw workers from their office and encourage them to enjoy some sunshine. It’s easy to confuse our climate as not being able to sustain the delicate life of flowers but they’re actually pretty resilient, so I also plan to include many colorful decorative floral parts. This park should also be made available for all who want to use it; I want to make it as handicap accessible as possible. A place to hang out that can be enjoyed by all.

You have a lot of great ideas. You have grown a lot during the design process of your pocket park which is great. Yes the design of your pocket park should definitely consider accessibility for all people. I would like to see more development in drawings and modeling to get a sense of the space more.
