Spanish Valley Park
|For this project I am designing a pocket park that the surrounding community could use for a variety of purposes. A pocket park is a small park with different functions that is often put in empty lots or spaces so that the general public can use.
The corner of Garces Ave. and 6th St. is one of the best areas to put a pocket park. This area is fully surrounded by neighborhoods, school(s), and offices; making it an ideal spot for students and/or anyone in the area to use this park because the park would be close enough to allow students and/or the people who work nearby to work or get together. Las Vegas Academy of the Arts is a high school that is approximately an 8 minute walk to the park, which is a short distance from the school. In the area where the park is located there are also law firms which can be used by the workers for gatherings with clients or friends.
In my park I will include picnic tables, benches, trees, plants, playground, and space for other outdoor activities. The park is approximately 140' by 98'. I plan to make the space comfortable by providing some tables with a little sense of privacy and adding natural shade. It can be seen from previous years Las Vegas reaches extreme temperatures as it gets closer to the summer. Therefore, as part of my solution, I will add as many trees in the most necessary spaces as a way to prevent heat from reaching the surface. Trees can provide cooler temperature on the areas that trees are capable of shading. When going to the park people most often look for an open space with some sort of shade that will block the sun, so trees will be a very useful way to use a natural environment purposefully. The trees I plan on using will be trees that can support heat without damage.

Hello M.Z.Z. I've enjoyed reviewing your project. I really like how you've identified a specific location for the park and also talked about who might use use. The statistics, maps, aerial photos, etc in the Collect Info step help paint a picture of the area. But I'm wondering if you could have drawn some conclusions from the data about the needs/wants of the neighborhood... which would then have informed the design decisions you made later on.
.
Your final renderings have a very nice quality to them. But your model is sort of floating in the blue sky, not rooted to the site you've identified. It would have been helpful to build/draw a bit of the surrounding neighborhood to help us see the context of where the park will be located and how it connects to the existing landscape, infrastructure, and buildings.
.
Keep going... You're on a good path!
