In this image I showcase my approach to redesigning the traditional bookcase. Since our school's library does not keep an enormous collection of books, I decided to create a bookcase in the shape of circle to both reduce the space a traditional one usually takes up and allow for the storage of more books. A second allows for the collection of more books without taking additional space.

I like this illustration - it really explains what you are talking about. If you were going to fabricate this, I would think about having some sort of support for the books to rest against so they don't easily fall off the shelf. Having those completely open shelves might create extra work. Maybe this design could be tweaked a bit to work.
