Westlake High School Athletic Pavilion Re-design

Obtaining Turf has been a long drawn out controversy at our school with the rainy fall weather reeking havoc on the natural grass.Through the use of “Field Turf” an artificial turf, the overall football program would improve. With a naturally porous material yielding a more effective drainage system than regular grass, players would be able to practice in the most severe weather conditions (practices often cancelled so that the field can drain/maintenance/overall poor condition that is unsafe for players). Field Turf allows for more traction so fewer injuries can occur from slipping but is more forgiving so that fewer concussions result from head to turf contact than what we would see on regular grass. Overall, this innovation would improve not only player performance, but also allow more practice time and yield fewer injuries. (Inability to practice for fear of ruining the field is a common problem in our athletic department as they practice in fall in the outfield of our baseball and softball fields, destroying the grass. The baseball and softball program, in turn have to pay to replant the grass as most of its gone by the time football season is done.)
