Roof Detail (Eastern Perspective) - The vegetative (Indian Rice Grass) roof and solar paneling on the west wing of the pavilion aid in one of the original goals of the design: to use "several aspects of universal design that will ensure the durability of the structure's materials, the sustainability of its overall life cycle, and its energy performance" (see "The Design Solution" under the "Overview" tab). Both these elements significantly reduce heating loads to the roofing material (especially during the intense summer months) and provide excellent weather retention. With the appropriate waterproofing membrane, drainage layer, filter fleece, and growing medium, the roof's structural underlying concrete slab will last for years after the pavilion's completion.
