This is what our cafeteria will look like from the front view. It shows what we had sketched and how most of the front of the cafeteria is glass. They will be low E2-E3 vinyl windows so that the building can be Eco-friendly.

This is really showing a lot of what you have been talking about with Crown Hall and natural light. I like the lower overhang because this side of the building faces South, and since we are in the Northern Hemisphere, the south gets the most direct sunlight. While this is good for natural light it can also mean rooms with lots of windows can overheat. Overhangs and solar shades are the designers primary tool to mediate this problem on South facades and you've done just that with your overhang. Now trying thinking if a similar solution for the upper windows as well. Look up the term louvers or solar shade and you will find lots of examples. The low E glass that you have specified will help with this as well.

We noticed that the front of the cafeteria is made mostly of glass. Having a full sheet glass is very difficult to maintain and does not provide a good source of insulation. How will the glass maintain solar gain and use it to convert into energy for the building?

I like how your group makes the most use out of the natural light. Do you think 2 doors are enough to prevent student jams?

Ikram Magzoub (Director of Interior Decor)
I think what your team has done so far is great. Painting the building from the outside in a light color gives a more nice look to the building. However, that also requires a lot of attention and taking care off since it will get dirty easily. Changing the color to a darker shade might be a better idea.

Tracee Brooks, Elite Innovative Solutions-- I really like what your team has done so far. The structure of the building looks really nice. How will people get to the second story? Will you use stairs, elevators, or something else? Also, is there any outdoor seating areas? I am really impressed with your team's work so far!

As you are designing a new school cafeteria, I suggest editing the front wall from being all glass to maybe something that is more insulated, and easier to maintain.

Your structure looks good, but how well people access it, and how would the pyramid on top benefit the student body, or is it a decoration.

Desirae LaSalle Director of Exterior Design for Urban Elite Designs

Jacqueline: We actually decided to make the second floor a wall instead of glass because like you said it is hard to maintain and we had issues with placing furniture if it was a wall of windows.

Gor: Yes we do think that two doors are enough because the current cafeteria has two double doors and it isn't an issue. The traffic inside the cafeteria is what is an issue and we have created solutions for that.

Ikram: thanks for the input! We haven't decided on a final paint so we will take that into consideration.

Tracee: To get to the second floor we have a staircase and for handicap accessibility we have an elevator. Yes, there is plenty of seating outdoors. We have tables outside the first floor under the balcony and tables and chair on the balcony.

Bram: The pyramid on top is part of a glass structure that goes all the way through the building and on the first floor there is a garden inside where students can sit, eat and talk with friends.

Is that all that will be in your landscape design?

Marcus Millan (Director of Sustainability and Energy)
No, we are working on a design for remodeling the whole quad. To make it a more aesthetically pleasing and more eco-friendly. We will also have walkways that branch out from the two main ones, both in blue and red, and along them will be plants that range in color and size.

Design is all about showing visually these things that you are talking about. When you have lots of people misunderstanding the images, it means you need to bring more of your ideas more readily into the images. If you took a piece of trace paper and laid it over this image and hand drew in some of the plantings and scanned that, it would help us get a better idea of what you are thinking.

Also when you make changes to the design, keep the old .jpg. It helps us see how the design developed (and shows how much work you have done). We'll know by the date when it was done.
