Third Place - Nikhil Chaudhuri - Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #278

Summary

In my brainstorming ideas step, I took a closer look at what spaces I would need in my design and how I should organize them successfully. That process started with a sun study as light is such an integral part of any design and was such a major issue with the old Wannan. The sun-study helped me determine the placement of the main court, the most important space in my design. I used a progression of various space diagrams (both 2D and 3D) to determine how I wanted to organize the spaces within my design. Finally, I did some rough sketches detailing two main ideas that I would then go on to develop and include in my final design. 1. The eye as a motif for my building physically and conceptually. 2. The use of a linear mesh structure of sorts to encase the main court in an elegant and transparent manner. The brainstorming ideas step also includes a lot of things I can't necessarily put down on paper - my many, long walks to school, during which I was constantly brainstorming, collecting ideas, and looking for that spark. The final two rough sketches in this section show the two sparks that became my design.
