The above image demonstrates several things. The first is the yellow rectangle - this represents the main court. The main court was a facility that I knew my design would need. The main court would serve as the main basketball court, indoor soccer facility, and main space for the fundraiser or any other assemblies. After I found the standard dimensions for a high school basketball court, I positioned the court oriented with the longest side facing the south and at the southern end of the site in order to maximize the amount of sunlight reaching the structure. Once I placed the court within my site, I experimented with the lines inherent in the space and from the surrounding landscape. Le Corbusier said in his piece, "Towards a New Architecture", Regulating Lines are "the necessity for order", "a means to an end", "an integral part of architectural creation". The above image shows the regulating lines that I developed from surrounding structures and other aspects of the landscape. When I started drafting floor plans, I always started with these regulating lines dotted in the background. They guided the forms of my buildings. I use these regulating lines to provide my design with a continuity and unity, as all the forms are derived from the surrounding landscape and each of the other forms in the building.
