Second Place - Hamza Qureshi - Redesign Your School Athletic Pavilion | 2014 National High School Architecture Competition #200

Summary

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR STRUCTURE TO "SAY"?
I know exactly what my athletic pavilion will say. It will stand as a manifestation promoting wellness and fitness. I see it standing as modern sanctuary. In an urban area desperate for as oasis, my structure will stand out. It will say, "This is a place for all, to seek refuge from the inhibitions of daily stress. Enter with your problems, and leave with none." My building will be a retreat in every sense of the word. This section explores the ways in which I will accomplish this.

THE PROCESS
This section mainly focused on channeling the info I collected to brainstorm ideas. I started with deciding on a spot to construct on, determining which areas would provide the best accessibility despite trade-offs. Next, I created an architectural brief to outline the pavilion's purpose and concept. It helped me clearly outline which facilities were necessary to the pavilion and what I could include to improve it entirely. Finally, I created a bubble diagram. I determined that my first bubble diagram did not flow well, so I created a new one with a reconfigured floor plan.

My biggest struggle was with formulating a concept to govern my design. It was difficult finding inspiration in the area, but the wooded area beside the school serves as an oasis among the desert of post-industrial warehouses. I want my pavilion to be an oasis for students. From here, I thought of a concept based on components of trees like leaves and bark, which give it its color, shape, texture, and resilience.

In my next step, I will consider solutions to problems that face the area. I will also begin designing my structure. Furthermore, I will explore floor plans, site plans, and materials.
