Daisys Pocket Park
|In the Chicago-land area we have a very large variety of shops, dinners and architectural buildings that set up apart from many other cities in the U.S. The problem is that most of those businesses are in the downtown area, and may be exclusive to people in the age group of 20-30. We forget that there are so many communities in the Chicago area that lack an area where they can unite as a community and relax. In most neighborhoods around Chicago, they are publicized to be unsafe, and infested with gang related violence, and because of the violence many parents do not let their children to go outside. When I observed the local parks around Chicago I noticed that there were places for the kids to play but no place for the adults to get to know each other. Another detail that I noticed was that in almost all parks there was a lack of gardens, there was no community garden or place for people to go and plant organic fruits/vegetables.
My goal is to create a space where everyone in the community feels welcomed and starts to create a sense of community with all the people around. I want to make sure that the park brings out the sense of it being a safe haven for the people in the Chicago lawn community. My objective is to create a park that is kid and adult friendly, which means that it will be an area that attracts all age groups. I wanted my park to address issues such as violence, I wanted to make sure that the park was safe enough to have young people 15-25 safe when in the park. The park will contain panic buttons surrounding the park to make it safe for people who go to the park early in the morning or late at nights. The park will contain a community garden for the people in the neighborhood to bond together in doing something that they like to do, the park will be environmentally friendly and if there will be lights around the park they will be working through solar panels, there will also be recycling bins through out the park, and compost areas for the people in the neighborhood. I hope that the park creates an environment that not only persuades people to visit the park but to want to be very close with the people in the community.
