Architect Seven: A Re-design of Mira Loma High School’s Cafeteria

Summary

After touring the city of San Francisco last week, our firm was greatly impacted by the beauty and the architecture in their many buildings, old and new. We pulled ideas for the interior and exterior design from buildings such as the Crocker Galleria, Transamerica Pyramid, and the Citigroup Center for their more modern approach in architecture. The Crocker Galleria and the Citigroup Center inspired our Directors to implement more open areas and natural lighting when designing the cafeteria space giving it a more relaxed and brighter feel. The Transamerica Pyramid gave us insight that we did not need to conform to the typical rectangular or square shape that most buildings are modeled after, hence the off-tiered octagonal shape in our design.

As a group, we were able to pin point the major traffic areas of the cafeteria during the school’s lunch hour. In order to improve this problem, we created a larger area where the students could easily line up and order their food in a more efficient manner without clogging or bottlenecking the area where students sit and enjoy their lunch.
