3) Description of Nearby Community :: Guidance, "B.2 Site Design: Ability to respond to site characteristics including urban context and developmental patterning, historical fabric, soil, Topography, climate, building orientation, and watershed in the development of a project design." - NAAB Student Performance Criteria :: In this section I will attempt to fully describe the features belonging to the neighborhood my pocket park is located in, "Murrieta Oaks", in a straightforward manner. The aim of the following charts and details is to help denote community needs that need solving. Information regarding the local economic nature will help provide insight towards what the residents are accustomed to, and how I may go about designing the park in such a way that it instills a satisfying sense of escape. Residents visit the park because they desire certain features that are non-existent at home, and to be aware of what they have grown used to is pivotal towards my final design. :: Because Murrieta is located in southern California, it's no surprise the average climate is higher than the national average, with the daily norm being 80 degrees (A1). It's also easy to concede that Murrieta faces much sunshine, again often more than the national average (A2). Though in the south, albeit dry, Murrieta on occasion experiences minimal precipitation (A3). Due to the dry weather, shade is especially valued, which is lacking relative to the park's pre-existing design. Therefore I will make it one of my many priorities; develop sources of shade whom's purpose is to protect visitors from the heat, despite them being outdoors. Proceeding the installment of added shade in my final design, hopefully it will draw more visitors who seek refuge from the unforgiving sun in the future. :: Murrieta Oaks is home to mostly upper-middle class families, with the average rental price being $1,716, higher than 65.1% of neighborhoods in California (NS). neighborhoodscout.com describes the local income, "The neighbors in the Clinton Keith Rd / Toulon Dr neighborhood in Murrieta are upper-middle income, making it an above average income neighborhood. NeighborhoodScout's exclusive analysis reveals that this neighborhood has a higher income than 78.4% of the neighborhoods in America. In addition, 10.4% of the children seventeen and under living in this neighborhood are living below the federal poverty line, which is a lower rate of childhood poverty than is found in 63.2% of America's neighborhoods." :: The pocket park resides directly southwest of a community elementary school, "Antelope Hills". This is incredibly important to note, seeing how most of the visitors are aged within the elementary spectrum. Thus, I will make an effort to have the park designed in favor of those who are twelve and under. :: It is also worthy to note how Murrieta, California has been recognized as being one of the safest cities in the country, according to safewise.com, "According to the FBI Crime Report, Murrieta is... the 8th safest city in the nation for cities over 100,000 population,... Outstanding schools, a variety of housing, excellent medical facilities and an amazing brand-new 6,000 square foot Youth Center round-out the reasons you’ll be tempted to call Murrieta home.”
