This is a newspaper article detailing the use of pocket parks in Los Angeles (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-parklets-pocket-parks-20130930-story.html). The author, Ann Simmons, details how the increases in activity in these places have made them a hub for a variety of people. She talks about how expansive these minimal lots can feel, with the use of stimulating factors like lots of color, and even the use of things like fruit trees (in Ohio apple trees would probably be the best substitute). They also include a focus on recreation, with exercise bikes and foosball tables included in a few of the parks. This gives me the idea for some sort of area dedicated to exercise and connected to the gym La Fitness located right next to the area where my pocket park would go. Users could both workout indoors during the winter, and outdoors during the summer when they want the fresh air and natural environment. The other thing she talks about is making sure that the areas are smoker friendly, because we want this place to be as natural as possible and not discourage a large amount of the population to come due to the smoke.
